DC Commute

I work in downtown Washington, D.C. For anyone who has driven the mean streets of D.C., you know there are really only two types of people; the ones who accept traffic as what it is and those who....don't.
I'm a strange bird. I enjoy my drives to work and home. In the morning, I catch up on the news, do some positive self-talk, and well, rock out to a tune or two. Generally, I'm pretty Zen. Similarly on my drive home, it's all about de-stressing, decluttering, and filling my mind with positivity.
So I always think it's hilarious when I look over and see my fellow commuters incredibly stressed, angry, sharing a few 4-letter words. I always wonder how someone like that can work in a place like this. It must be exhausting. I remind myself they likely think I'm the particular one, blurting out Sinatra and smiling like a fool.
I'm sure not here to tell you what to do with your drive (except for texting...put that dang phone down). I will make a few practical suggestions for your consideration though, whether your commute is in Washington, D.C. or Peoria, IL.
1. Look, you're stuck in it like everyone else. Nobody wants to be there. Everybody wants to get "there" as quickly as you can. So don't be that selfish driver who goes to the front of the exit ramp and cuts in. Just. Don't.
2. Whether you're negative or positive, your drive is going to take just as long. So choose positive. You're on your way somewhere and people are waiting for you. That's awesome. See, I just gave you a reason to be positive. The drive already takes long enough. Don't let the drive take your joy away so that when you get to where you're going, you sour the mood. That is no bueno.
3. Relax. Whether you're on your way to your office, a work call, school, or home, a relaxed drive means you show up ready to be productive and successful from the moment you arrive.
So maybe I can't get you to turn up some Tony Bennett and chill. But if you consider these 3 steps, hopefully you'll have a better and more enjoyable drive. Now seriously, put the phone down and pay attention.
