Lessons From The Walking Dead

I like many of you am totally obsessed with The Walking Dead. It is an incredibly well written and well produced psychological thriller of a television show. As luck would have it, it is about to start it's new season.
Like many of you have done since the show's inception, I've tried to mentally place myself in the situations the characters find themselves in and while it is fun in fantasyland, I would definitely prefer it never happen in real life.
In studying the show, I've thought about some key takeaways we could all benefit from and use in our everyday lives. There are more, but I've narrowed a couple down I'd like to share with you.
First thing I would say which has been reinforced in me is the attitude of "it is what it is." That attitude is incredibly potent in that many of us (myself included) try to find meaning in everything that happens in our worlds, especially when things don't go well. Sometimes a family member unexpectedly gets a terrible disease, sometimes a friend has a car accident, sometimes your boss is in a crabby mood on a Monday morning. What is the meaning behind these things? Sometimes, there is no meaning. It isn't anyone's fault. Sometimes unexpected, uncontrolled things happen to and around us. Life is life and "poop" can happen. Fixating ourselves on why we're dealt certain cards in life assures us of only one thing; we miss the opportunity to make the best of the situation. Sometimes life is sunshine and roses, and sometimes you're in the middle of a zombie-infested major American city. Lesson learned, you've gotta survive the hard knocks of life. You've got to accept the unexpected and let the negative stuff slide off you or else you will be crushed under its weight.
The other thing which pops out at me as I watch the show is the idea of making the most out of what time we have. We fans of the show have seen far too many individuals we thought were too crucial to the plot  get "killed off" and are regularly left jaws dropped in our living rooms in disbelief. It is a very real lesson as any of us who have lost a loved one, or even lost a relationship with someone we thought would be part of our lives forever. Sometimes the best we can do is make the very most of the time we have with the people in our lives by making every moment count.
Finally if the show has taught us anything it is that life can be tough and cruel. They say trying times test our humanity and into everyone's life are guaranteed trials. One of those typical trying moments may very well be Monday morning which is just hours away. Choose to meet adversity and the unexpected with the right mental attitude.
We human beings have survived so much in our existence. You could say we are masters at surviving the struggles of everyday life. With the right attitude of acceptance and positivity we can get through pretty much anything life throws at us. Sure it helps if you've got a crossbow, a shotgun, or a Katana sword, but a strong positive attitude might be the perfect weapon to successfully navigate your life :).
